Quizlet is a fantastic study tool you can find a use for in all of your classes, not just English. With Quizlet, you can build your own flashcards to study, as well as take advantage of flashcard sets built by others. Creating an account is free, too! I've provided a link to vocabulary words that may be unfamiliar from The Great Gatsby, one of the novels we will be reading this year. Please review these words before we read the novel and check back when you come across unfamiliar vocabulary. You can use the search bar to find vocabulary sets for the other works we will be reading as well.

The most critical part of any paper you write are not the claims you make, but whether or not you can back them up and show that you have credibility. One way you can develop your ability to defend your assertions is through the interactive Showing Evidence tool. This tool is a great way for you to assess the quality of your claims and evidence. While this tool will not be required as part of any assignment, I suggest you familiarize yourself with it and refer back when you are having trouble with the analysis portion of your papers. Although this resource was developed for teachers to use in grading their students’ work, you can use it in much the same way – evaluate your papers before turning them in to see if you have strong evidence or more work to do.
In this class you will be writing two research papers, and the interactive graphic organizer Essay Map is a great resource you can use to clearly organize your thoughts. With this tool, you can develop an outline of your essay that includes an introduction, body paragraphs, evidence that supports your points, and a conclusion to tie everything together. You can also save and come back to it later, as well as email or print your outline. To make your papers more manageable and to discourage procrastination, a simple outline of your paper made with Essay Map will be due one week before the due date of your paper. This way, you won’t be scrambling for a topic or supporting evidence the night before. You will thank me later! Just click the image on the left to get started!
